Principal Scientist, Process Development

The Downstream Process Development team is responsible for the development and implementation of downstream processing methodologies and analytical procedures that can be easily transferred to the cGMP Manufacturing Team. The process characterization function within the Downstream Process Development group will be responsible for the characterization of previously developed or transferred processes heading towards commercial manufacturing.

This position will perform a variety of laboratory procedures in Downstream Process Development. The position will serve as a lead for technical advice and perform multiple complex projects at a time. The Principal Scientist position is capable of working independently and without direction on assigned tasks/projects. This position plans and conducts work requiring independent judgment in the evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation/modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. This position also designs new approaches to problems encountered and uses a wide application of complex principles, theories, and concepts in the specific field.

This is a full-time on-site position, Monday – Friday 8am-4:30pm

The Role

  • Initiate, direct, and execute scientific research for innovation and process improvements

  • Research and develop existing and new technologies/process improvements

  • Manage client projects independently

  • Act as the technical lead for client development projects, communicate project status internally and externally, and effectively provide technical explanation/rationalization

  • Execute purification experiments including automated chromatography (AKTA platform), filtration, clarification, column packing, and tangential flow filtration independently

  • Expert knowledge of protein purification and analysis with an in depth understanding of all modes of chromatography

  • Expert knowledge of scale up principles with respect to purification and filtration

  • Update group members on background and status of client projects by giving oral updates or internal presentations

  • Align best practices and new technologies with needs of process development and manufacturing departments

  • Other duties as assigned

The Candidate

  • Ph.D. in Biotechnology, or related field with at least 8-10 years of laboratory experience, preferably in an industrial setting, OR

  • MS in Biotechnology or related field with at least 12 years of industry laboratory experience, OR

  • B.S/B.A. in Biotechnology, or related field with at least 15 years of industry laboratory experience.

  • Process scale chromatography and filtration (viral, chromatography, tangential flow, normal flow) experience.

  • Experience Operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting chromatography workstations and process skids preferably in an industrial setting.

  • Viral clearance validation, process scale-up, and technology transfer preferred.

  • Knowledge and experience working in a cGMP environment preferred.

  • Aseptic technique experience

  • Experience writing standard operating procedures, batch records, and reports.

  • Experience mentoring junior staff regarding laboratory procedures and scientific projects.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reading of written documents and use of computer monitor screen, reaching with hands and arms, talking, writing, listening.

  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, carrying, grasping.

  • Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.

  • Must comply with EHS responsibilities for the position.

  • Working in a lab environment will require working with skin irritants, lung irritants, electrical equipment, sharp instruments, toxic materials, and hazardous waste. Safety procedures must be followed to minimize exposure, including proper use of PPE (personal protective equipment) and clean room gowning.

  • Working conditions will be Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioned controlled.
